MKEPP Overview

MKEPP is an acronym for Mt. Kenya East Pilot Project, a GOK/IFAD funded community project that aims to reduce poverty around the Mt. Kenya and the Tana River catchment basin through sustainable natural resource management practices.

MKEPP has been labeled a 'Pilot Project' due to the unique nature of it's operations since its the only IFAD funded project that employs the natural resource management approach in alleviation of poverty. Lessons from the project are to be replicated in other water catchments and river basins in future.

MKEPP is funded by Government of Kenya, IFAD, GEF and the local community. The IFAD  Loan Agreement  (Loan No. 599-KE), between the Government of Kenya (GOK) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was signed on 26th February 2003 and became effective on 1st July 2004. The GEF grant was signed on 3rd November 2006 and became effective on 16th March 20.
